Automotive Plastic Parts: Materials, Processes & Compliance
Oct 14, 2026
Automotive plastic parts are specified against three constraints at once: heat, chemistry and compliance. A grade that survives a 150 °C under-hood soak can still fail a fuel-exposure test, and a part that passes both can still be rejected for an interior odour or VOC reading. Selecting a material is therefore a matching exercise against a written requirement list, not a search for the strongest resin on the market.
This guide covers the thermoplastics used under the hood, in electrical components and inside the cabin, the processes that form them, the tolerances that are realistic, and the documentation an automotive customer audits before releasing a part to production. Every figure is given with its unit so that a specification can be compared line by line.
